vilvit.io

is an initiative to enable more innovation in the music industry through better business processes, delivery mechanisms and energy efficient hosting.

A global repository of recorded music allows streaming services to cut cost by consolidated efforts, content creators to securely store and manage their catalogue, a one stop shop for correct metadata and reduce the energy footprint of the music industry combined.

Pronounced velvet, the Norwegian word for The Vault, vilvit.io is a naturally cooled, hydro and wind powered hosting solution to safely store your archive for future generations. And for your business today.

WHY vilvit.io

Content creators and the music industry is becoming conscious of the environmental footprint we leave behind us. At the same time, we have imminent tasks at hand that need sorting. How can you contribute when you have releases that go out next Friday, you might think?

The answer lies in better infrastructure for uploading, archiving and distributing files for a true digital workflow. And taking care of nature is also very often the path to more innovation and better business conditions.

ARTISTS

It's not some future thing. Artists and the entire content creation collective are already asking questions if the companies they sign with and their entire delivery chain are acting responsible.
What if you could tell your artists you are part of the global initiative to make the music industry sustainable?
What if the tools you have to release your music improve substantially and are also better for the environment? When releasing music, imagine not pushing multiple files out across the globe – deliver one file and the rest is just metadata transfers. What if fixing metadata happened in one place, with the tools put in your hands?

An  old competition metric in streaming was how many tracks a service has in the catalogue. Having a critical amount is still important. But what if the global catalogue of recorded music was hosted in one place with a low energy footprint? All you had to do was to provide tokens to prove that you had the licenses and vilvit.io took it from there?

Today, every streaming service hosts almost the same catalogue as the other. Over and over again. Petabytes duplicated. If you are a streaming service paying for hosting of a long tail of catalogue never used, wouldn’t it be nice to cut that cost and collaborate for a better future in one action?

The plumbing of the music industry is old, how we consume is new.

For the first two decades, a lot of handling innovation in the DSP industry has been about gatekeeping. Gatekeeping based on tools for an old competitive context. This has led to duplication of effort and inefficient processes.

Perhaps what suffers most is innovation. To start a new service is a monumental task, even a decade in with streaming. The cost of ingesting a full catalogue requires cash and capability. What if this was already handled, and all you needed was tokens to prove you had a license to stream a specific subset of the world's recorded music? This lowers risk of failed effort both with labels and new streaming services. New initiatives can be propelled out alongside transparent reporting.
